Microstructure and mechanical properties of TiC particle reinforced high chromium cast iron composites

Titanium carbide powder has the characteristics of economical price, small specific density, high microhardness and low friction coefficient. It has good wettability with molten steel. It is often used as the particle reinforcement phase of steel-bonded cemented carbide and can also be used for particle reinforcement in PM high Chrome cast iron composite. This article uses powder metallurgy (PM) and super solid phase line liquid phase sintering (SLPS) technology to develop TiC particles (TiCP) reinforced 20Cr high chromium cast iron (mass fraction 20%Cr) composite Materials, study the effect of TiCP addition amount (mass fraction) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of composite materials. With the increase of TiC addition amount (mass fraction), the hardness of composite materials shows a positive upward trend, while the impact toughness and strength first increase sharply. worsens, then slowly decreases. When the mass fraction of TiC particles is 20%, the hardness of sintered TiCP/HCCI reaches HRC67.2, the flexural strength is 1049.0 MPa, and the impact toughness is 1.8J·cm−2.
Quenching heat treatment can further effectively improve the hardness of TiCP/HCCI. When the mass fraction of TiC particles is 20%, its hardness can reach HRC 69.3 after air-cooling quenching at 1050°C.
